Ancient Southwestern bowls with black on white dec

Ancient Southwestern bowls with black on white decorations on the inside. The types here are; Mimbres Black on White, Pinto Polychrome, Show Low Polychrome (a weird type that might also by typed Pinedale Poly), Kwakina Polychrome, Walnut Black on White, Huerigos Polychrome (a blurry picture but it's quite a rare type and decorated bowls are not common in Casas Grandes types), and Snowflake Black on White. Black on white bowls were so important to so many cultures across centuries that it is strange that they went out of style eventually and by the time of European contact there were very few black on white pots being made in the Southwest. #southwestpottery #ancientpottery #decoratedpottery

As discussed in last week's livestream, all over smudged black pottery such as San Ildefonso and Santa Clara Pueblos are famous for today, has a long history in the Southwest. Pictured here are examples of Aztec Black (first two photos) from northern New Mexico and Ramos Black (last three photos) from northern Chihuahua. Made hundreds of miles apart, these are the only two types of prehistoric all over smudged pottery in the Southwest that I am aware of. When Stephen Lekson was making the case that the elites from Aztec migrated to Casas Grandes I think he might have missed this, but it seems like a huge smoking gun to me.
