Our schedule of pots in the Ancient Potters Club for the rest of the year. Pots from all over the Southwest, different cultures and time periods, polychromes and bichromes, slipped and unslipped, bowls, jars, a mug and a double pot. Should be a lot of fun, learning and push a few of us out of our comfort zone a little. The Ancient Potters Club is a Wednesday evening Zoom pottery class where we focus on hand building pots like those made in the ancient Southwest. Salado duck effigy pots I have known. The Salado definitely had a thing for duck effigy pots but not everywhere, particularly in the far eastern range of Salado. It would be rare to see one of these in the Phoenix valley or Tonto Basin. I am currently in the middle of replicating the last pot in this series which came from the Kuykendall Ruin along the western slopes of the Chiricahua Mountains in far southeastern Arizona. Burnishing pottery. Salado polychrome pottery is some of the most difficult and time consuming pottery to replicate because it involves the use of a hematite wash that must be burnished into the clay while still damp. This burnishing must be done carefully so as not to smudge the red over the white slipped areas. 5 of the hardest ancient Southwestern pots to recreate. Your run-of-the-mill round bottomed ancient pot is not all that challenging to make, at least once you have figured out how to coil. But some ancient pots were made by true masters and are a real display of skill in the ceramic arts. Here are five of the most challenging, complex ancient pots that will have you scratching your head, wondering how they were made.

1. Donut pots are hard but not uncommon. But combining a ring pot with a stirrup pot, now you're just showing off.

2. This canteen looks rather ordinary at first glance, but what's that inside the spout? The maker of this pot had an ingenious way of attaching the carrying strap, passing a cord through the interior of the pot in a little tube that is completely sealed so the water cannot leak out.

3. This little pot has 4 lobes at the base, how they made this is not clear to me and also how did they work on it without flattening out the bottom?

4. Bird effigy pots are fairly common in the ancient Southwest, but attaching two identical birds with a stirrup handle, that is amazing. The questions from a technical aspect are how do you work on this without cracking the handle, and how do you let this dry slowly and evenly to avoid drying cracks?

5. This antelope is so amazing and perfect you would think it was a modern creation found at a roadside curio shop. A ring pot at its base, then comes up with four legs to make a body and head of a pronghorn antelope and of course it's all hollow and interconnected. This might be the crowning achievement of all prehistoric Puebloan pottery, expertly formed and painted. This would be so difficult to hand build from clay it's hard to even imagine.

A closer look at Salado Polychrome and what we can learn about how it was made. Here is a closer look at the materials and methods of its manufacture.

1. Salado Polychrome pottery was made in central and southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico from about 1275 until 1400. Sherds of this type are very common at sites in this are and time, usually being the most common decorated type found there.

2. The paint often has this thin, watery appearance like watercolor painting. This shows that they were using organic paint.

3. If you look closely you will often see gaps like this between the red and white slip. This demonstrates that the white and red slips were each painted only in their respective areas and sometimes they overlap or leave a narrow gap of brown clay between the colors.

4. They will usually smudge the red onto the white a little as they are polishing it. This shows us that the red was applied and polished while still damp and the polishing had to be done carefully so the stone didn't overlap the white areas.

Many of the secrets of how the ancient pottery was made are hidden in the pots and sherds if you know what to look for. The pot shows is from the Mills Collection at Eastern Arizona College.

It started as a way to teach pottery during the pandemic, now over 5 years ago. Today the Ancient Potters Club has over 70 different pottery projects and over 250 individual class sessions online that students can browse through and watch at their leisure, a huge library of pottery knowledge. Every Wednesday night we get together online from all over to work on the latest project together and share our successes, failures and discuss pottery. It’s a lot of fun and I can honestly say that even I as the teacher have learned a lot and been pushed way beyond my comfort zone to make things I would never otherwise have made.

Saint Johns Black on Red and Saint Johns Polychrom

Saint Johns Black on Red and Saint Johns Polychrome was made in eastern Arizona and Western New Mexico from about 1150 to 1300 AD. It is one of the widest traded pottery types of the ancient Southwest and undoubtedly the most widely traded type of its time. It is the red ware equivalent of Tularosa black on white, made in the same villages and painted with the same designs. It is most commonly found in bowls but there is the occasional St Johns jar such as the last image in this collection. When white outlines appear among the black designs it is called Springerville Polychrome. St Johns evolved out of Wingate Black on Red and Polychrome and evolved into Pinedale Polychrome in the west and Heshotauthla Polychrome in the east.

What did the T-shaped doorways so popular in the ancient Pueblo world represent. They appear prominently starting around AD 1020 at Chaco Canyon (especially Pueblo Bonito), persist at later northern centers like Aztec and Mesa Verde, and later show up far south at Paquimé (Casas Grandes) in Chihuahua, Mexico, they even cut t-shaped holes into the handles of their mugs. But what was motivating this T-craziness?

Stephen Lekson said “They catch the eye because they were meant to be seen… Given the fact the T-doors were originally and later generally exterior doors-visible to the world- the message may well have been one of membership or inclusion… T-shaped holes cut in Mesa Verde mug handles and Paquimé’s altars demonstrate that the shape meant something.”
