Getting ready to fire some Ramos Polychrome.

What is the most beautiful yet unknown pottery typ

What is the most beautiful yet unknown pottery type of the ancient Southwest and why is it Babocomari Polychrome?

Found on a relatively small area around the upper San Pedro River Valley in southeast Arizona and made between about 1200 to 1400 AD. A study has suggested that all of it was made in one village known to archaeologists as "Babocomari Village."

The pots shown here are from the Amerind Museum which I was privileged to photograph back in 2014.

Both wet and dry processing methods for wild clay

Both wet and dry processing methods for wild clay have their strengths and weaknesses. Some clays are more suited to one than to another. If your clay is relatively pure when you dig it, more than 75% pure clay, then it may be better suited to dry processing. Because why would you need to remove those 25% impurities just to add about the same amount back as temper? Of course maybe those impurities is something you don’t want in your clay body, for example calcium carbonate which could cause ugly pops later on. Of course if your clay is less than 75% pure then you probably need to remove all of those impurities through wet processing so you can add a controlled amount of impurities back into the clays temper.

I've been teaching primitive pottery workshops for many years now and they are always fun. My classroom is a shade cloth, our inspiration is the ancient sherds found at the nearby ruin, we dig clay, form and decorate our pots and fire all in the great outdoors just like the ancient potters. I have scheduled my spring workshop for March 23 - 27, 2026 and this year we are doing something different, we will make pots for both a surface and a pit fire and fire both ways to learn the difference and see how the atmosphere influences the colors of the pots.
