I’ve been going to Eastern Arizona College to view and photograph the Mills Collection for many years. But in January of 2025 I saw a pot I had never seen before, this little owl pot was sitting on a shelf it had not been seen on before. So last month we made this the monthly project for the Ancient Potters Club (that’s my weekly Zoom pottery class). How I fired my Salado bird pots replicas. First yo

How I fired my Salado bird pots replicas. First you need to pre-heat the pots real good all over, this will drive off any remaining moisture which can cause the pots to break in the fire. Then stack them on rocks over the hot coals, the rocks should be pre-heated too. Finally arrange the dry, hard wood around the pottery and let it burn. The actual fire is very brief but hot, around 20 minutes and it will get up to about 750 C. The organic paint I used creates a layer of ash on top that must be wiped away to reveal the black designs underneath. This is a dead-simple way of making earthenware pottery similar to how our ancestors did it for thousands of years. Painting the Kuykendall duck pot replica. This pot is painted with organic paint made from boiled down mesquite beans, nobody knows what the ancient Salado potters used. When applied to a smectite clay slip and fired in a very short duration firing (less than a half hour) this results in black, carbon designs. Our schedule of pots in the Ancient Potters Club for the rest of the year. Pots from all over the Southwest, different cultures and time periods, polychromes and bichromes, slipped and unslipped, bowls, jars, a mug and a double pot. Should be a lot of fun, learning and push a few of us out of our comfort zone a little. The Ancient Potters Club is a Wednesday evening Zoom pottery class where we focus on hand building pots like those made in the ancient Southwest. Salado duck effigy pots I have known. The Salado definitely had a thing for duck effigy pots but not everywhere, particularly in the far eastern range of Salado. It would be rare to see one of these in the Phoenix valley or Tonto Basin. I am currently in the middle of replicating the last pot in this series which came from the Kuykendall Ruin along the western slopes of the Chiricahua Mountains in far southeastern Arizona. Burnishing pottery. Salado polychrome pottery is some of the most difficult and time consuming pottery to replicate because it involves the use of a hematite wash that must be burnished into the clay while still damp. This burnishing must be done carefully so as not to smudge the red over the white slipped areas.
