One of these things is not like the other. We often see photos or videos online in which there is the potential for perceived immoral activity, and yet only in certain situations do people feel the uncontrollable desire to lecture others about morality. Take for example this set of photos. If you saw the first one posted would you comment “you kids better not get up to any hanky panky”? With the second would you comment “I hope you’re not planning on exceeding the speed limit”. With the third would you be compelled to say “don’t shoot anybody with that”. I think in each of these cases we would assume the person in the photo had half a brain, was capable of making good decisions or just plain feel like it’s not our place to lecture this person about morality. And yet it never fails, every time I post anything resembling the fourth photo somebody has to lecture me about picking up sherds, keeping sherds, etc. First of all I generally never take home artifacts, it’s illegal in most places I go, also I collected a lot when I was younger and found that having boxes of artifacts at home did not bring me joy. Sometimes though when in my own land and the artifact is something I can use, I do take it home. But that’s not anybody else’s business any more than telling those teenagers not to mess around. Personally I am a very moral person, but where I draw my moral boundaries is nobody else’s business and I have no tolerance for people moralizing at me. At 53 years old I have a pretty well defined idea of right and wrong and some random person on Facebook is unlikely to change my mind anyway. #morality #internetculture
