The firing event this morning went well. Only three people other than me and my wife showed up, but we did fire some pottery and had some good conversations.

My four pitchers made from two different clays, on

My four pitchers made from two different clays, one from the high country on the Colorado Plateau and the other from the low desert of the Gila Valley. I took them out and fired them in two different ways, a northern smothered pit fire and a southern open surface fire. The results told a story about why the Natives from those areas chose to fire the way they did. The whole story and my experiment are documented in my latest YouTube video.

The tools used are a puki (base mold), a gourd scraper, a needle tool (made from a mesquite thorn) and a small piece of buckskin for smoothing the rim. Of course good clay is also a necessity, this is wild clay from near the Mogollon Rim in Arizona. Have you ever tried coiling?
