A series of photos showing some of the process of

A series of photos showing some of the process of making pottery canteens from my most recent video. First the pot is hand-formed from native clay, then slipped and painted with natural materials, then taken out in the desert to be pit fired. While the fired pots were cooling I collected some dead agave leaves and made some cordage from the fibers, this was used to make a carrying strap for one of the canteens. Short pieces of yucca stalks made corks for the tops of the jars. You can watch the whole process in my latest YouTube video which also talks a bit about the history of canteens in the Southwest.

Behind the scenes of filming at Chaco Canyon and Aztec Ruins last fall. Last year we traveled to northwestern New Mexico to film a documentary about the "Chaco Phenomenon", we stayed in an RV park in Cuba, NM and spent several days exploring the ruins and filming around there (thanks to filming in National Parks being made legal again last year). White Mountain Red Ware - A category of ancient po

White Mountain Red Ware - A category of ancient pottery made by Ancestral Puebloans in east central Arizona and west central New Mexico between about 1030 to 1400. Vessels of this ware were built of tan or grey clay and crushed potsherd temper via the coil-and-scrape method. They were then slipped with red firing clay and decorated with mineral paints and white clay. The sherd display is at the Arizona State Museum which has been closed for the past 2 years, the pots are from different private collections and museums. #ancientpottery #southwestpottery

Making chocolate drink like the ancient Hohokam. Analysis of drinking vessels at the classic period Hohokam site of Los Muertos revealed that 80% of them contained residue of chocolate. The chocolate itself, or more appropriately cacao nibs was traded north hundreds of miles from where it was grown in central Mexico. What was this chocolate that they were enjoying like? Well they didn't have sweeteners but it's not bad, less bitter than black coffee with a rich chocolatey flavor. #chocolate #hohokam #primitivecooking

Cibecue Polychrome is one of the rarest and most u

Cibecue Polychrome is one of the rarest and most unusual pottery types from the ancient Southwest, and also one of the only painted corrugated types. This is an obliterated corrugated pot (usually a bowl) that is highly polished and smudged on the inside and painted with black/purple mineral paint with white outlines over a red slipped surface on the outside. It was made between about 1275 and 1350 by Mogollon potters in the mountains of central Arizona. Pots shown here come from Pueblo Treasures Museum, Pleasant Valley Museum, S'edav Va'aki Museum and Show Low Historical Society Museum. #southwestpottery #nativeamericanpottery

Last December I saw this 700 year old Tanque Verde

Last December I saw this 700 year old Tanque Verde Red on Brown bowl at Agua Caliente park in Tucson. On my way home I found some brown clay on the side of the road nearby so I grabbed some. This is the result, not a perfect replica, but pretty good. Made from local clay and mineral paints and fired in an open outdoor pottery firing. #aguacalientepark #replicapottery #openpotteryfiring
