Pukis have been used in the American Southwest for centuries as a bottom form and potters turntable when coil building pottery. These pukis are porous, unglazed terracotta which will allow the wet clay to release with time. They are round bottomed for easy turning while working. Puki is a Tewa word, (a language spoken at some Pueblo communities in New Mexico and Arizona) for a shallow dish.
