Today I’m at Salmon Ruins for the 2026 Southwest Kiln Conference. I had never been here before, so I really enjoyed seeing their pottery collection. It was a very wet day and we went out and collected firewood, I hope the wood dries out before the firing. Looking forward to tomorrow’s activities.

A few ancient treasures I saw at the Cortez Cultural Center this morning. That St Johns Polychrome canteen is amazing. It looks authentic, but really rare and unusual with a white bottom with red designs painted in it. This would be worth trying to replicate.

I visited Navajo National Monument today, they have a great selection of pottery on display. Here are a few of the mugs in their collection. Like a lot of national park service facilities, there is very little interpretation and explanation of what we are looking at. Don’t worry though because I am making a video.

Organic black paint is not usually a true black bl

Organic black paint is not usually a true black black, rather it is often a bit washed out, like watercolor. This kind of painting often shows the individual brushstrokes made by the ancient artist. The four Salado pots shown here are each around 700 years old, yet the brush strokes allow me to visualize the long dead artist at work.
