In that video I show how they make clay from natural materials in Mata Ortiz and then I try to make my own clay using the same process. Ancient Mesa Verde mugs from Mesa Verde and Canyon of the Ancients museums. Mesa Verde mugs are relatively unique in the Southwest due to their prevalence and design, including variations like rattle bottoms, handles with cut-out designs, and different shapes and sizes. Many of these mugs have been found in archaeological digs, for example, "Mug House" at Mesa Verde National Park is named for the mugs discovered there, highlighting the importance of such artifacts in understanding ancient life. Shown here are three very small (< 6" in diameter) pots from the collection of EAC. The first is a White River Polychrome bowl which demonstrates the very thin, unpolished white slip to which the black organic paint is applied. The second, a little Tonto Polychrome jar shows that the red slip never overlaps the white as you can see the brown lines in between the two where they don't quite meet. The last is a Los Muertos Polychrome jar which shows what happens when you get that white slip too thick, you can see it is crackled all over the place.

I’m really starting to love that Upper Cottonwood grey clay, it has really great working qualities and so far nothing has broken or cracked from drying or firing. I’ll be making a video about processing this stuff soon.
